The mail out at our corner mailbox was not picked up as we had a new mail person every week or so and that mail box wasn't on their list. I had to show the box to our new mailman, as he had no idea it was there. We are sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you.

The Ministry of Transportation has amended The Highway Traffic Act (HTA)
Regulation 581 - Accessible Parking for Persons with Disabilities.

  • Two new health practitioners groups, Chiropodists and Podiatrists have been added to health practitioners who can certify Accessible Parking Permit (APP) applications.
  • The maximum validity period for temporary permits has been reduced to 12 months from 24 months.
  • Any person who comes in possession of an unexpired permit issued in the name of a deceased person is required to return permit to Service Ontario.

A new form is available on September 17, 2007, from the Ministry of Transportation website www.mto.gov.on.ca or at Service Ontario Driver and Vehicle License issuing office. The old APP application will not be certified after January 31, 2008. Any questions contact Karl Groskopf at 416-235-4681.

The National Pensioners convention in Saskatoon October 24-27th will be reported in next month's (December) Voice. I will be there to speak on your Federal Resolutions from Ontario on your behalf.

Many of our snowbirds will soon be leaving for the south and I have received word that some hospitals and clinics will not receive Canadians as they no longer want the paperwork associated with getting their money. It is very important to obtain travel insurance when you go there, but also making sure you understand exactly what the policy does and does not cover.

If you should run into difficulty while down south be sure to get authorization for any medical care or treatment proposed to you - your insurance company may not recognize some diagnostic, medical, and laboratory procedures as emergency benefits. Call your insurance service centre before getting the treatment.

With some policies you must pay the hospital yourself first and then the insurance company will reimburse you, while other companies will pay the hospital directly. Does your insurance policy set a time limit for submitting claims? Be sure to obtain and keep all your receipts from your medical care.

  • Do you have sufficient coverage through your employee benefits or your credit card?
  • What is the maximum each policy will pay above your province medical insurance limits?
  • Does age affect the kind of coverage you can expect?
  • Will pre-existing conditions affect your coverage?
  • Do you need approval from the company before seeking medical treatment?
  • Does your company offer 24 hour helpline that you can call in an emergency?

These are only a few of the questions you need to ask before you go south but stay healthy and enjoy yourself. Also a reminder, keep your air ticket or a receipt of when you left Canada as it is often required by your insurance company.

If you are considering a reverse mortgage on your home please get legal advice. I have not met anyone who recommends reverse mortgage (except companies selling them). There is a push on to sell seniors a reverse mortgage this fall and winter. So please get advice before mortgaging your home.

With Thanksgiving and Halloween behind us now we can start in November to buy gifts and plan for Christmas.

Have you thought of how your club and the U.S.C.O. can celebrate our 50th anniversary?

Please let us know.
