June
is here and hopefully it will bring warm weather.
With all the cool days and snow in western Canada,
one would wonder about the validity of the claims
by some experts about global warming. I saw an article
last year that claimed seven hundred years ago bananas
were grown at the border of England and Scotland.
That would seem to indicate that the world was cooling.
Fact or fiction, I don't know.
When
parliament was prorogued, a piece of legislation that
was left unfinished was the bill on White Collar crime.
It was important to many people including seniors
who had lost millions of dollars, which is some cases
was their life savings.
Information
received from the office of Justice Minister Rob Nicholson
confirmed that the legislation was reintroduced in
parliament in early May. Two points that I had asked
for when speaking to the Standing Committee on Justice
were (a) mandatory prison time and (b) restitution.
These are now included in the legislation.
A letter was received from a Seniors Centre regarding
Liability insurance under the U S C O. The answer
to that is, each club is responsible for their own
business, and the U S C O is not involved in providing
insurance. However due to recent occurrences, of which
U S C O is aware, it is strongly advised that every
club should have a liability insurance policy.
As
this will be my last message before summer, I will
take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe, happy
and healthy summer. I also hope to see at least some
of you at the convention being held at the Holiday
Inn in Guelph on August 16, 17 and 18th. Until then,
Adieu...
